This CD is largely comprised of freely improvised pieces by a harmonic
choir – a group of improvising overtone singers recorded in 1996. Originally recorded with a
view to selecting a piece to send off to ‘Unknown Public’, they remained
on the shelf until Frank finally felt that he’d found the right format for
releasing them within the context of a CD. The overtone choir was instigated by
Mike Steer (now Maxwell Steer) who eventually suggested naming the group Enchanter.
The group rapidly became four with Jenni Roditti's leaving. Subsequently the
group elected Frank to instruct them in overtone techniques and to direct the
group. Finally with the departure of Max we were left with a trio of Bill
Martin & Susan Nares which met regularly for the large part of the group's
existence and took the name Stargate. A beautiful harmony developed
within this devoted group, which inspires the music on this CD.
There are a total of 8 tracks with the choir and these
are interspersed with sympathetic pieces either for Frank’s solo ‘hoomi’
(overtone singing) or for his instrumentals featuring Tibetan Singing Bowls,
Tibetan Bells, and Gongs – instruments themselves characteristically rich in
overtones.
The CD has a total of 13 tracks and lasts almost 79
minutes. Their order and timing create an uninterrupted flow, a meditative
space. The theme for the whole album is that wonderful natural phenomenon the ‘Aurora
Borealis’ (as depicted on the album cover). Track 1 ‘Singing
Crystal’ (1986) and track
12 ‘Stargate Sirius’ (1991 & 1999) feature
Frank’s solo hoomi, the latter accompanied by various gongs and Tibetan singing
bowls, whilst tracks 2,5, and 8 (each from 1999) represent his instrumental offerings upon deep gongs, Tibetan
bells, and the beautifully mystical-sounding Tibetan water singing bowls
respectively. The final exceptional and electrifying piece ‘Song of the
Hathors’ (1996) whilst featuring the overtone choir also includes Frank’s Tibetan
Tantric undertone chanting. Stargate (the overtone choir) worked under
Frank’s direction for almost 4 years and naturally developed a very good
rapport. All three members are composers in their own right and so this music
is a form of instant (ego-less) composition. The human voice as an ‘Aeolian
harp’ comes closest to describing this beautiful sound, which also powerfully
draws listeners into the interior journey. The music all springs forth from out
of profound meditative silence and, whilst at times powerful, carries an
overall gentle healing and uplifting quality.

Track
1 ‘Singing Crystal’ was recorded in The White Temple of The
White Eagle Lodge in January of 1986 by
Richard Elen. The recording of this one track was made entirely digitally and
utilises UHJ-Ambisonic Surround-Sound techniques. For more details
regarding that recording session check out The White
Temple Recordings.
For
a full technical account of this recording session read Richard’s
article 'New Age' on the Ambisonic website.
The
overtone choir improvisations were recorded by Oliver Nares of Musicalfresco
on location at Hurst Castle.
