FRANK PERRY TRIO

I had the very great good fortune to play with these two giant geniuses and innovative improvisers (Evan Parker & the late Derek Bailey) from around 1970. These two had worked together in a variety of improvising situations but had somewhat fallen out when I, perhaps, rather naively, had a wish to bring them back together. I had played with each of them separately before in different improvising situations and they kindly agreed to play with me in this trio. We didn't rehearse - in fact, in all of the improvising groups that I was involved with there was never any discussions regarding the form that the music would take. It was always spontaneously improvised. There is a short extract below from the Trio performing at the Albion Music Club close by the Albert Hall.

One of our performances was for the Royal Commonwealth Society where they had a power cut and so Derek had his acoustic guitar with him and played a solo set. I played a solo piece and then Evan Parker and myself performed as a duo. So this duo wasn't even planned - it was due to a force of circumstances. As was my custom at the time I carried around my little Philips Cassette recorder and would record for my own interest to analyse my playing to see where I could improve upon my group improvising.

Many years later, in the 21st century, I was invited to perform my current style of improvising upon a large selection of Tibetan ritual instruments (percussion) in Milan, Italy, and arranged to do a swap with the promoter - who was also a jazz musician - of some rare tapes that he had with some equally rare ones of my own. Amongst the latter he'd asked for the recording of my duo with Evan which finally was released on his label upon vinyl. A small sample of which can be heard by clicking on the second link below.
